Installing an undersize unit

Although we don’t encourage undersizing, the fact is many of our customers have installed an undersized unit and are thrilled with the results. Can this work for you? The answer depends on goals, house design, climate and personal expectations.

Your goals

  • If your goal is to minimize or eliminate A/C use, you’re going to want to go with a larger unit.
  • If your primary goal is to reduce heat buildup in second-floor bedrooms and create a cool sleeping environment, a smaller unit MAY do the job.

House design

Heat buildup can be particularly problematic where bedrooms are on the second floor. In a home where all bedrooms are upstairs, a smaller unit can still provide excellent results. Conversely, the impact will be less dramatic where bedrooms are on the main floor.

Climate

The higher your average humidity during cooling season, the more air is required for the perception of cool. There is no formula for this, it’s just something you need to factor in to your decision.

Personal preferences & expectations

Finally, the last and most variable consideration: your own ideas and personal preferences on comfortable climate control. We can’t really answer this for you, but consider this: if you’re looking forward to feeling a robust evening breeze, you want all the airflow you can get. On the other hand, if you’re just looking for heat relief in stuffy upstairs bedrooms, a smaller unit could satisfy.

Operating tips for undersize installations

  • you can focus the cooling effect by controlling which windows you open: only open the windows of the occupied bedrooms
  • start the fan as soon as outside air cools below 75 so your bedroom will be nice and cool by bedtime
